The EU is switching digital product passports on category by category. Batteries are mandatory from 18 February 2027; textiles, electronics and construction follow as ESPR extends. One framework carries them all — when the next category arrives, you add it, you don't buy another system.
Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 makes an electronic passport mandatory for EV, light-transport and industrial batteries over 2 kWh from 18 February 2027. The legal duty sits with whoever places the battery on the market. Almost nobody's records are in a shape that can fill one.
You are not the one who must issue the passport — but you are the one holding the lifecycle. Manufacturers, recyclers, insurers and auditors will all come to you for it. Public, legitimate interest, authority, operator, internal. A recycler sees chemistry and state of health; the public sees the identity plate; nobody sees your sites or your people unless you say so.

Hand a battery to a recycler and the passport goes with it, same id, under their branding. Identity travels; your sites, your people and your photos do not.

Export the register, the passports and their full history as one signed archive. Anyone can verify it wasn't altered after the fact — including an auditor you've never met.
If you service batteries for other people, the evidence you capture for the passport is the same evidence that gets you paid. A removal drafts the replacement charge with its photos attached; the customer accepts it from a link with a typed signature; an owner approves it; the statement exports straight into Xero, Sage or QuickBooks. Invoice numbers stay in your accounting system — we just stop the argument about what was done.
The passport framework underneath is generic: assets, identifiers, append-only history, tiered public documents and custody transfer, with the battery rules supplied as a versioned template. As ESPR extends digital product passports to further categories, each one is a new template on machinery that is already carrying regulated data in production.
